I was recently made aware of Fright Rags’ fun novelty “Viewfinder” — this is what everyone calls knock-off View-Master viewers for some reason — that features scenes from horror movie classics!
Over the last four years on instagram, I’ve asked followers what movie or TV show reels they wished existed and horror movies always top the list!

The packaging is a delight! The Monster Squad appears to feature snaps from the 1987 film. You can buy it here.
I remember nothing about this movie but the title for whatever reason until I watched this trailer and then it all came rushing back to me. What a funny little niche movie to turn into a View-Master reel. This delights me.

I’ve been on the road for work and personal stuff nonstop for the last two months, so while I’ve ordered all of the items I linked above, I haven’t had a chance to sit down, take them out and look at them. I’ll be doing an unboxing soon and will share any new information I glean then.
The early reviews from the (always cantankerous) View-Master collecting community was disappointment that the photos are not really in 3D. Having not seem them myself (yet), I can’t say! If the 3D aspect is the thing you care most about? Maybe pass on these.
However! Most people remember View-Master as a novelty item that ties into other places and products. So, for almost everyone else, these seem like a winner for their fun packaging alone. And what a treat that Fright Rags created this dream View-Master product for so many horror fans!

Tremendous packaging! Their graphic designer did an excellent job. Assuming there will be more of these in the future.
Love The Monster Squad, one of my favourite movies!
They missed a trick by not using comsecutive frames from the film for each eye. If the camera was moving sideways for that scene, there’d be a 3-D effect.
