Let's Tour the World with View-Master's Photographer in 1947
Exclusive never-before-published photos incoming
I’ve posted before about having 100 personal View-Master reels that belonged to Rupert Leach, View-Master’s original Director of Photography. The sub-collection is certainly the most valuable and unique thing in my collection of reels. And I’ve decided to dedicated the next couple of years to sharing the photos with my subscribers. I’ll take snaps of each one and provide whatever limited context I can about the people and places therein.
The posts will be rather random since the reels are undated. Most appear to have been taken on work trips, but they jump around both time and the globe as you will.
This first reel’s only marking is the Subject line: Interlaken, Switzerland. I’m going to assume Rupert Leach went to Interlaken for work, since View-Master published its first reels of Switzerland in 1947 and 1948. So these photos were likely taken on that business trip.
I know these dates because the commercially available reels were published in 1947 and 1948 and promoted in the company’s internal Dealerscope publication in July of 1948.
I used LeiaPix to convert this to 3D to give you some sense of the depth:

That’s the first reel! I feel so much pressure, you guys! Heh.
If you missed this, here’s my deep dive into a little View-Master mystery and the history behind one of the 100 Rupert Leach reels:
If you made it this far, please ❤️ this post. And considering becoming a paid subscriber. It helps keep this thing going.
I will always remain ever so slightly envious you have his collection of reels - but pleased for you in greater measure! :-) Very cool you'll be letting a few of these out into the world. Wonderful.
